Granite is one of the hardest
natural materials on earth – only diamonds and quartz
are harder. It is formed by the slow hardening or crystallisation
of molten magma under the earth’s crust. Granite is
the result of a volcano that has cooled down and is
often composed of several different minerals.
The combination and amounts of
these minerals give a granite its colour. The name given to
a granite often refers to the area from which it originates
(e.g. Shivakashi is a warm, white granite that comes from
the Sivakasi region of India) or to the main colour of the
granite (e.g. Venetian Gold, Nero Absoluto).
Suitable applications
Granite is a favoured stone in the production of kitchen worksurfaces
due to its superior hardness and heat resistance. It can also
be used to produce wonderful exterior landscape objects such
as water features.
