Limestone can be thought
of as the sea bed of a pre-historic water mass. Over
millions of years soft sediment was deposited and compressed
by the water pressure above it. A chemical process also
took place turning the sediment into limestone – mostly
calcium or magnesium carbonate. As the water levels
have dropped, it is now relatively easy to quarry limestone.
Limestones from different regions have unique characteristics
and colours. Most are a creamy off-white, but some are
dark grey, silver-blue, orange or almost pure white.
Suitable applications
Limestone can be honed or sand-blasted to produce stunning
flooring that is equally at home in the aged country cottage
or the contemporary apartment. These finishes are non-slip
therefore limestone can be used for fabulous wet-rooms and
bathrooms, indeed, entire shower trays can be carved out of
a single block of stone.
