Most marble actually started
off as limestone, but through the action of intense
pressure and heat, known as metamorphism, it re-crystallised
into a generally harder material. The streams of other
minerals give some marbles their distinctive veining.
When choosing a marble, particularly one with a striking
vein, it is important to remember that no two pieces
will be the same. The veining of consecutive slabs in
a block of marble can be used to create a dramatic effect
where the vein seems to reflect at the junction of each
slab.
Suitable applications
The ancient Greeks loved constructing in white marble but
painted the surface to make it more decorative. Today, we
tend to admire the natural colours and patination of this
beautiful stone and it is easy to see why it has been used
in interiors for thousands of years. Marble can be used in
the same manner as limestone in flooring and wet-rooms but
will also make fabulous kitchen worksurfaces. Marble does
not have to take second place to granite in this arena.
