Onyx is a beautiful translucent
stone that is a variety of chalcedony (a crystalline
form of quartz).
Historically Onyx was black or white
but it has come to be used as the defining label for all colours
of chalcedony.
It is particularly stunning when its
translucent properties are exploited, for example, backlit
in a contemporary bar.
