The first step is to break
into the mountain or rock deposit. Originally this involved
monumental man-power and long hours with chisels and
mallets.
More recently drilling
and blasting made this task less physical in the initial
stages.
Nowadays the quarrying
is generally carried out using enormous machines that
can cut or drill and break massive blocks of stone out
of the deposit.
In the case of granite
these blocks weigh approximately 17,000 tons.
