Travertine is a
stone that comes in a variety of colours, cream, ivory and darker
hues.
It is actually a dense and compacted
type of limestone formed by the calcium deposition
of rivulets and natural springs. There are two great sources for this stone dating back to the time of the Romans and from which many if not all of their major construction was formed. These are Tivoli near Rome and Denzili in Turkey known for its Roman architecture surviving in abundence.
Most commonly honed and filled, travertine
can make a beautiful swimming pool surround or a
fabulous wet-room in a tumbled or brushed finish, but perhaps it is most spectacularly displayed as single sheets showing what only nature can do.
The block can be cut against the grain or with the grain to create fabulous effects, each individual piece a natural landscape.
