SGF STUDIO VISIT

BLOG ITEM INFORMATION

A brisk but sunny morning in February. Simon Hunter and Jason Byrne visit the renowned sculpture yard of Mario Fruendi and Silvio Santini. A glorious early start and perfect set up for their inspection of works being manufactured in Carrara.

Mario and Silvio have carved for more than 35 years for the great contemporary artists. Renowned pieces for Max Bill and Richard Erdman over many years and to scales that seem improbable.

Blocks of 60 tonnes and finished sizes of 8x5 metres have left this tranquil yard in the foothills of the Colonata.

Their iconic Arabescato Cadillac, all seventeen tonnes, rests idle. If only we could find the keys!

Their work to this day is emblematic of how Carrara sculpture studios beguile and captivate.

It was a great day.
